Your design decisions should effortlessly align with your lifestyle without the need for constant adjustments to accommodate passing fads.

After all, as a rule of thumb everything that is expensive or difficult to change within 5 years should be timeless—longevity matters.

Jute Rugs

When it comes to decorating your home, one pivotal decision you’ll have to make is choosing a RUG, and this could be for any space around your home. Yet, the array of rug options and material choices available can be overwhelming.

Jute rugs are a great choice, they are like that hefty woven basket that works no matter where you place it. It’s one of those rugs that can be moved from one room to another and just always work. They are neutral and add great texture with natural fiber.

So they can be a neutral base to your space that you don’t need to keep changing so you can always switch out your furniture, your paint colors, your flooring underneath, and you can always maintain that jute rug.

layered Jute rug

Jute rugs come in all different sizes, shapes, and colors and even patterns now and they’re very easy to layer with. So if you do want to hop on trends and layer in a more decorative rug on top of your jute rug, you can absolutely do that!

They will add interest to your space without being cheesy or over the top. They are perfect for; entryways, hallways, living rooms, dining rooms, and any kind of high traffic area.

TIP: If you have a space that needs brightening-up. You can use a lighter jute rug that’s a little bit more of that ivory cream color “I love using those”. If you want to add warmth to your space, then I would go for that natural jute color. Or if you want to add some pattern and contrast, you can go for a pattern jute. There’re just too many different options and I think there’s something perfect for every single space.

Penny tiles

Penny tiles

In the world of tiles, there are so many options, there’re so many design decisions that you can make with tiles, from choosing colors, patterns, to finishes. If it’s overwhelming to you and you have no idea what direction to go in and you don’t want to regret your choice, I would opt for a penny tiles.

Subway tiles

I would say subway tiles should stay on the wall as a backsplash, wall tile, or shower tile. Subway tiles will always work well there. You can always count on subway tiles to remain a classic in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

Those two tile choices are forever choices, they’re always going to be on trend, and they are always going to make your space look cool and well designed. They are also going to be that classic finish that’s going to last forever.  I love to use of penny tiles on the floor specifically and I think when penny tiles start to go on the wall it really looks busy but when it stays on the floor you can really have a lot of fun with it, you can implement styles, patterns and colors and have a lot of fun with penny tiles and I really think that’s the best part about it.

Marble

You can incorporate the timeless elegance of marble in various ways: by using marble-look tiles for flooring or in showers, adding a marble top to a dresser, choosing marble countertops or a quartzite island with a marble-like appearance.

TIP: or even opting for a budget-friendly option like applying marble contact paper on table tops. Additionally, marble accent pieces such as bookends and sculptures can enhance your interior design with classic appeal.

Neutral Drapes & Curtains

Window treatments are something that we all know can date your home very quickly and drape material is that one choice you really have to be careful of and strategically choose something that’s going to last for years

You don’t want to be rehanging curtains and changing your drapes every few years. So I recommend going as neutral as possible and honestly I really recommend white or ivory curtains. They are going to make your home look light, breezy, airy, filter light well and also gives you privacy when needed.

I really think having light drapes opens up your home. If you change your flooring, your wall color, or your furniture, light drapes are something that can be that neutral base to last in your home.

There can be a lot of regrets when it comes to curtains but color is usually a good place to start. Colored curtains date very quickly especially when you’re changing up different finishes around your home.

If you’re stuck with curtains that were following a different color palette you’re going to regret them. Dark curtains don’t make your home feel very light and bright so white or off-white curtains are definitely the way to go.

If you’re looking to kind of hone in on a decision for window treatment, I would go lighter and brighter.

Gilded Mirrors

If you have a room with a window on only one side, incorporating a gilded mirror can help balance the natural light and maintain a classic style.

The classic elegance of gilded mirrors has been appreciated across different periods and design styles, making them a versatile and timeless choice for interior decoration.

Herringbone Pattern

Herringbone pattern is a timeless and elegant design choice for flooring, whether it’s hardwood, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), or tiles.

The herringbone pattern’s appeal lies in its ability to add visual interest and depth to a space while maintaining a sense of tradition and sophistication.

So go for herringbone pattern for a classic interior design

Medium Toned Hardwood Floors

If you’re considering refinishing hardwood floors and aiming for a timeless look, opt for brown hardwood floors that strike a balance—not too light, not too dark, and free from prominent red, yellow, or blue undertones.

Built In Shelves

Room Sources

Built-ins have become popular in the last few years, as they help elevate a room and make a space feel bigger not to mention the space they come with. They are most popular in the living room, often framing the fireplace.

however, built-in desks have surged in popularity, particularly for those working from home. The spaciousness they offer creates an executive atmosphere compared to cramped standalone desks.

Open Shelving

Open shelving

If you’ve been wanting to incorporate some kind of built-in element in your home, another option is open shelving. Open shelving can be restyled in many different ways to keep up with Trends. It can be painted, it can be refinished, you can always keep open shelving and rework it over years.

Open shelving has become a lot more popular in kitchen design which is making it a little bit trendy but it’s also a classic idea that’s been around forever. You’ll always see open shelving in kitchen designs no matter what year you look at.

You can implement open shelving in a built-in way that is going to add a ton of character to your room and your home in general.

Or you can bring it in afterwards with freestanding shelving or floating shelves.

You can also add a lot of character to those pieces as well by implementing a gallery rail. Gallery rails really finish off open shelving. They keep everything in place, they really create that nice edge that brings in another element of detail to your space. It’s something that can be added to shelving, it’s something that can be taken away so you can always change up the look of your shelving with a gallery rail.

Picture frames & Panel moldings

When it comes to wall treatments around your home, you’re probably looking for something that you can put up once and you won’t need to take down for years, or at all.

The only choices I would really recommend are picture frames, or panel moldings. These will add classic elegant detail to any room of your home and they can be done in many different styles and sizes.

Bead Boards

You can also do bead boards, bead boards are very classic as well and they add a ton of detail to a small space or large space.

You can leave them at a chair rail height or you can bring them up even higher to be a little more dramatic with them. Or you can just do a simple tongue and groove.

Tongue and groove definitely has a lot more of a neutral look to it since it is something that can work with almost any style just depending on how you lay it.

Natural Unlacquered Brass

Picking hardware around your home can be tricky because they can lean in many different directions and styles. Your hardware can make your home look dated or up to-date, and they can make your home look trendy and also classic.

One finish that will always make your home look elegant and timeless is unlacquered brass. Natural unlacquered brass will change over time, it will patina, and it will age which will give you a new look as time goes on.

You won’t get a cheap manufactured look out of it but you will get a classic and timeless look and it will always be classic and on trend.

Natural unlacquered brass is definitely for people who do not mind the imperfections of it because it is not going to look perfect, and you kind of have to be okay with that when going into it.

It will add texture, interest and a lot of warmth to your home so if that’s something you’re going for then I think it is such a great choice.

Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Wallpapers have always been popular in home designs, it is a little hard to remove, and it does take a lot of work to install so it is something that you kind of just want to decide on once and not regret after a few years.

I think the best way of doing that is using peel and stick wallpaper because the peel and stick wallpaper goes on quickly, it is quick and easy to remove, and you can still achieve that trendy or classic look you’re going for depending on the pattern.

So if you really want to play around with pattern in your home I don’t think you’ll ever regret using peel and stick wallpaper because you can just remove it if you hate it or if you are changing the look of that space.

I think wallpapers are one of those things that people end up regretting over time or want to remove after some time. So the peel and stick wallpapers are the best choice.

Neutral Color Palettes

Different colors and designs come and go quickly so there’s always a new color of the year and there’re always trending colors and designs.

Now you can work those into your space or avoid them completely. You probably understand why a lot of people choose neutral palettes when it comes to their homes. Buying new furniture, new décor, drapes, paints and all of the finishes that really make up your home can be expensive.

If you want to have something that looks as timeless as possible, and you don’t want to regret your choices, stay away from a lot of colors and go for neutrals.

This is something I’ve definitely tried to do in my home when it comes to all of my large furniture pieces. I do not mind changing the color of my walls, I do not mind getting new little décor pieces or maybe a new rug but I don’t want to be buying new furniture over and over again to keep up with the trend.

So I go with the neutral color palette when it comes to furniture. As long as that’s my neutral base I can always swap pillows in and out, throw blankets, and wall color choices.

either use color palettes in your home that you genuinely love and that you will love for years to come, or stay away from color altogether and go neutral for a timeless look.
