What is luxury you ask?

Luxury in home design is often misunderstood as an attribute reserved only for those with substantial budgets.

However, the truth is that a touch of sophistication and opulence can be achieved with just a dash of creativity and a discerning eye for aesthetics.

Defining luxury begins with understanding what it means to you.

It’s not merely about price tags attached to furniture and accessories; rather, it’s about cultivating an environment that resonates with your personal sense of refinement and comfort.

It’s about the subtle elegance and understated grace that emanate from thoughtfully curated spaces.

When we think of luxury, it’s easy to conjure images of lavish displays of wealth, but true luxury extends beyond material possessions to encompass a sense of tranquility, comfort, and refined taste.

In essence, luxury isn’t solely about extravagance; it’s about infusing your living space with elements that reflect your personality, values, and aspirations. It’s about creating a sanctuary where every detail speaks to your unique sense of style and elevates the everyday into something extraordinary.

Embarking on the journey to create your dream home involves finding inspiration from various sources, whether it’s perusing design magazines or curating boards on platforms like Pinterest.

In this post, I’m going to share ways to bring luxury into your home for that sophisticated style you’ve been looking for – no matter where you live!

1. Rug Selection and Placement

Go big with your rugs

If you want to have a luxurious living room, you must go large on your area rugs.

Go big as you can, it’s really important that the front feet of your sofas, your arm chairs, and your side tables all sit on the rug. If they don’t it will look like you have got a rug that is too small for your room, it will look cheap, your room will look smaller and it won’t be as inviting.

Moreover, when almost all of the furniture sits on or partially on the rug it all feels very cohesive, it feels like the rug is the right size for the room.

Use rugs to introduce Color

A good way to introduce color into the room is not just by doing the cushions, but bring it into the rugs as well. It will feel much more sort of considered, it will feel like it’s a much better color palette rather than just an afterthought.

→ TIP

To make a rug work when some of your furniture is half on half off, you can inset the rug.

So that’s something that you would need to do when you’re doing your renovation to allow you to have some of your furniture half on, half off without rocking (this prevents the rug from becoming a tripping hazard too).

But if you want to make sure that you don’t need to do that you just have to make sure that your furniture is either fully on the rug or if it’s not, you can buy some foam pads that will lift the back legs of the furniture up so they don’t rock when you’re sitting on them.

2. Window Treatments for a luxurious living room

Window treatments are a really important consideration in your room. They can make it feel bigger, brighter, or they can totally kill the design.

Simple un-patterned fabric

One of the things I love do with window treatments is go for quite a simple un-patterned fabric.

In a room where you have a lot of windows, If the fabric is cheap and has a pattern, it is usually noticeable right away. On the other hand, a plain fabric with a nice texture often appears much more luxurious and inviting.

Weigh down your curtains

Another thing that can make your curtains look more luxurious, is if you have them weighted at the bottom, they will hang really nicely.

→ TIP

When you’re choosing your curtains, avoid fabrics with horizontal lines. These lines can cause the fabric to puff out, making it difficult to achieve a neat, straight line when installed.

Which means you might need to get a curtain tie back as well which is an extra cost and may not achieve the desired look.

Maximizing natural light and ceiling height

It is so important to not block out natural light and always go as high as you can with your window treatments to make your ceilings feel taller.

If you are doing roman blinds it is important to think about details like sash windows, so when you have them folded, ask your curtain maker to line up the folds with the sash windows.

Poles Over Pelmets

In terms of trends in window treatments for me, there’s been a noticeable shift away from heavy pelmets towards poles. Incorporating more traditional elements like poles adds a refined touch to the decor.

Going for a bronze pole, in particular, lends a slightly more contemporary and clean aesthetic.

This choice is practical too, as it allows for the window treatments to be raised high, enabling ample natural light to flood the space without obstruction, which might have been the case with pelmets.

3. How to Decorate Around a TV for a Luxurious Living Room

If you just shove a TV on top of a side-board it’s not going to look luxurious. Here are some of my favorite ideas for styling TVs.

Decorating Tips To Make Your Home Look Expensive

Incorporate your TV into joinery for a cohesive look

Always try to integrate your TV into some joinery and have a really considered solution for it

If you don’t have the budget for fitted joinery you can design a bespoke furniture that is really simple but will give that same illusion.

Paint the wall behind your TV dark or add a grass wallpaper

You can also put a polished plaster on the wall behind or you can just do a grass cloth wallpaper.

What that does is it just makes it feel more beautiful because there are other things to look at besides the TV, and it creates a nice feature out of it.

Blend your TV with room aesthetics

You can also decide to go darker to create a distraction from the blackness of the TV. This allows your TV to blend in and look a bit more seamless.

Here is a list of other ways you can blend this piece of tech into your living room

  1. Layer art work
  2. Use backlighting
  3. Paint an abstract mural
  4. Create an art gallery wall behind your TV
  5. Get a Samsung frame
  6. Incorporate a split-level console
  7. Hide the TV wires
  8. Use a dark console

4. Lighting

Layering light with different styles

Lighting fixtures are so important when creating a luxurious living room.

Mix different styles of lighting, including chandeliers, sconces, and table lamps, to add layers of light and create a warm, inviting ambiance.

Don’t be scared to mix different styles and don’t necessarily dismiss more classical traditional antique chandeliers because you can still make them feel up to date in contemporary.

Get high-quality pieces

Invest in high-quality light fixtures with beautiful designs and finishes that serve as statement pieces in the room.

If your budget does not allow for a really beautiful chandelier, you can’t afford the size or the scale or the brand that you want don’t get one at all.

There’s nothing worse than something that’s not right for the space.

Also if your ceiling height is not quite right for a chandelier again don’t get a chandelier but perhaps focus on other elements like wall sconces or table lamps.

You will still get that feeling of grandeur of luxury and elegance but you are not having anything in the middle of the room that is going to make the ceiling feel lower.

5. Utilize Accessories for Luxury & Warmth

Accessories are so important for creating that luxurious feel in any space and they are also the easiest way to upgrade your space.

Group and Layer your accessories

By grouping and putting them on coffee table books it makes those accessories feel much more luxurious and really elevates them and I think this kind of finishes off a room.

If you’ve got a beautiful living room or any interior and you don’t accessorize it, it is never going to feel truly luxurious and inviting.

So don’t be scared to layer up the items in your home.

I think the key to accessories for any living room space is to have an oversized bowl, this is a great thing to have on your coffee table or a sideboard to hide all your remote controls and keys.

Incorporate texture, color, and natural elements

Try and pick interesting objects that have different textures, different colors.

By having all these natural beautiful finishes, it really makes your interior feel even more luxurious, your eyes always seeing these beautiful objects on a daily basis.

So think about what things you are drawn to, whether it is nature, what colors do you want to bring out in your room, what kind of patterns can you correspond.

And remember for a seamless look pick colors from your fabric scheme onto your shelves and onto your surfaces.

It is such a great way to layer up your room and make it feel more luxurious.

6. Sofas

Choose durable fabrics

Now with the main sofa always make sure that you choose a really hard fabric.

Don’t just rely on the Martindale test or the information you see on the back of the fabric.

Do your own test as well, get a piece of jewelry and scrape that across and see how easily the threads come loose.

Maybe rub some dark denim on it, see how easily that stain might sort of transfer. It is so important that it is practical because if it does get stained it won’t feel luxurious.

Mix neutral upholstery with colorful accents

Mix up fabrics on the sofas and the upholstery, but try to keep the larger pieces of upholstery very neutral. Because they are a much bigger investment, you are going to notice them in your room a lot more, and you could get bored of that color. It might not be so easy to change.

Consider comfort and aesthetics in seating arrangement

I do like to bring color into the upholstery rather than just the cushions, as I said earlier it feels a lot more considered and I think an armchair is a really good way to do that.

When it comes to the sofas and the seating what I tend to do is put the big most comfortable sofa opposite the TV cause that’s where you want to sit and relax the most, and then perhaps the armchairs that maybe aren’t as comfortable but look more beautiful are as you enter the room.

Remember the shape of your furniture should very much be inspired by the architecture of the room, and by other elements in the room. So if you have arch windows you can go for a curved back sofa.

7.Additional Furniture

Incorporate various styles of tables

I love to mix up different styles of tables in the room. you can have some with a solid base, and this is a really good thing to do if you have a plug socket behind and you want to hide the trailing cables.

Maximize usability with over-the-sofa table

This is perfect for making a space more useable.

You can put your cup of tea there and you can still relax on your sofa and it makes it a lot more inviting and for me that still looks really luxurious.

Coffee tables

No luxurious living room is complete without a coffee table.

It is so important for making your room feel grounded, giving a focal point, and it is a great area to dress as well as making sure that when your guests come around you can have some nice snacks and some drinks on there so that they feel at home.

→ TIP

If you don’t just want to have an ottoman in the middle of your room by sort of combining the coffee table with that as a nest it still looks elegant, luxurious, and you are comfortable too.
